The Haunts of Benzie County

Ed Moody, Pumpkin Sculptor by John Clement HoweLocal Haunts: Where to go to get your fill of chills this fall from the Traverse City Record-Eagle says:

Friday in Benzonia, a half dozen or so sites will be featured in the "Haunts of Benzie County Tour." At each residence, a ghost representing a local, historical character will tell his story.

"Folk lore and ghost stories and legends are something that I think are easily lost, especially nowadays. It seems like these are pieces of history that aren't necessarily easily passed down. Everyone loves a good ghost story," said Blake Compton, a volunteer at the Benzie Area Historical Museum.

Click through to read some of the creepy tales and don't forget about the Manistee Ghost Ship on the SS City of Milwaukee in Manistee!

Fall Color on M-22

The new m22colortour.com web site hopes to cooperatively market M-22. A feature in the Traverse City Record-Eagle relates that Rand McNally recently rated the scenic route as one of the five greatest driving tours in America and that the M-22 Color Tour is a collaborative effort of the visitors bureaus in Benzie, ManisteeĀ  and the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

"In addition to the color tour, Benzie County offers a wonderful fall festival spread over the first two weekends in October, giving people another reason to make the short drive to our area," said Steve Campbell, owner of the Harbor Lights Resort in Frankfort, whose resort is poised for a solid fall season following a solid summer. "Bringing more attention to this region through promotion and special events will only help our business and the many other businesses that rely on tourism."

…one appeal of the M-22 Color Tour is that it's a one-tank trip for many in Michigan and across the Midwest. That makes it an appealing day trip or weekend getaway for those who want to savor autumnal beauty.

It certainly is a gorgeous route, as you can see from the photos in the Michigan Highway M-22 Group on Flickr – here's a slideshow for "fall" from the group which will grow as the color proceeds.

The Betsie Valley Trail in Benzie County

The Betsie Valley Trail is a 22 mile long, hard surfaced trail. The asphalt portion is six miles long and goes from Frankfort, through Elberta, along Crystal Lake to Beulah – perfect for biking, rollerblading and walking. From Beulah to Thompsonville the trail cuts through woods and farms. This portion is 13 miles long and is a compacted aggregate surface that is great for mountain biking and all kinds of pedestrian uses (it's. Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail's great trail tour page (with photos) begins:

The Betsie Valley Trail is built on the bed of the former Ann Arbor Railroad, which carried freight and passengers from Toledo through Ann Arbor, Owosso, Cadillac, Thompsonville and Beulah to Frankfort and Elberta. From 1892 until 1982 the freight cars were carried across Lake Michigan on car ferries to Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Passenger service was discontinued in 1951 and freight service in 1985. The railroad was abandoned in 1994 and, in 1998, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) bought the rail corridor. Benzie County and the Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail have been working with the DNR since 1992 to build the Trail.

You can even ride the trail one way if you make reservations with the Benzie Bus service who will take you, your friends and bikes to any spot on the trail for $2 ($1 for seniors). For info and reservations call 231-325-3000 or visit BenzieBus.com. Here's the Betsie Valley Trail map and you can also check it out on the betsiebay.net map!

Pumpkin launching over Betsie Bay

Video of the giant pumpkin drop and launching pumpkins with trebuchets (catapults) at the 2007 Frankfort Fall Festival. You can see a photo of what the pumpkin did to the car in the Benzie County group on Flickr!

The participants were Traverse City West Senior High, Glen Lake High School (whose videos somehow got corrupted – sorry), Manufacturer's Technical Academy of Traverse City and Grand Traverse Academy. They wanted to thank the MEEMIC Insurance Co for sponsorship.

Also a big thanks to Song of the Lakes for letting us use their song Haul Away Joe!
