Spring in northern Michigan means morels! From mid-April to about Mother's Day, the woods are full of shroomers hunting this famous mushroom. Morels come in a few different varieties including the early spring black morels and the yellow morels, which can last until early June. Although this inexpensive sport is great for novice hunters and serious mushroomers alike, everyone should take a moment to learn how do identity mushrooms or find an expert. Many mushrooms are deadly, and remember "when in doubt, throw it out."
Everyone wants to know where the perfect morel hunting grounds are. Although morels will grow anywhere, they are finicky little fungi about when and where they will grow. Serious morel hunters never reveal their hunting ground. Many have theories on where morels grow best, such as in wooded area around Ash trees, or around decaying Elm trees, or even in burned wooded areas.
One tip to keep in mind, is that when you find one morel, there are usually more close by.
