For around $20 you can enjoy a Northern Michigan summer stroll down Main St. in the harbor town of Frankfort. Treat yourself to an ice cream cone from Kilwin’s or splurge and get fudge. Then meander down the street to watch the sunset on the pier overlooking Lake Michigan. Summer doesn’t get any better than this!

Betsiebay.net's own Laura Herd is traveling to the Rothbury Music Festival July 2-5 with 10 team members with all-access, VIP backstage passes. With support from Rothbury, our team will survey Rothbury staff, environmental leaders, volunteers, attendees and artists to gather input and feedback for the purpose of creating an annual Rothbury-afterglow event in Northern Michigan beginning in 2010. This afterglow event will feature intimate concerts with Rothbury artists highlighting youth involvement, Rothbury Think Tank discussions, leadership retreats, festival debriefings/soapboxing and sustainable initiatives that extend and build on the Rothbury brand in the NW Michigan region.

Because of our unique festival access this year, we will be bringing those of you at home – or those who want to follow along at Rothbury – blogs, photos and videos of all the behind-the-scenes going-ons at the festival. Visit our blogs to check out our daily Rothbury coverage.

The best of times are free and easy in Northern Michigan
By Danielle Horvath

For around 20 bucks or less, you can fill a cooler, grab your sunscreen and spend the day at the beach that gives you the best of both worlds – warm North Bar Lake and a few feet away, Lake Michigan to cool off. Just north of the village of Empire, the beach goes on forever and offers panoramic views of the dunes and the coast. There is a considerable hike around North Bar Lake, so it tends to attract a younger crowd.
